    introducing....
...the brand new LJ community MenWhoCrochet. Now somebody please post, willya?
    2:33 pm
    Oh. Yeah.
A month or so back I figured out how to convert txt files into ereader books for my palm pilot, and yesterday I figured out how to transform PDF files into txt files. Pictures don't transfer over, but somehow I am able to get odd non-English letters and characters.

This makes me very very happy, as I combine my ebooks with the handydandy scrolling function on my palm pilot to produce a lean green subway-riding ebook reading machine. :)

crank up that palm pilot....or iPod...or cell phone....
My palm pilot seems to be going through its battery charge pretty rapidly, and I am not always near a plug. But good news! Whatever devices can be plugged into a car's 12 volt cigarette lighter can be recharged using the Baygen Freecharge.

So I ordered one last night. I'll give a product review of sorts when it arrives, but I have owned several Baygen windup radios, and I love them.

    That costume photo...
A number of you wanted to see what the result was from my sewing exploits the other week. Here is a photo from Pride; I am the one in the boots.

    getting out early
After a good day at work, I am heading out. BF-Bear and I are making steak and potato dinner over the fire in the fireplace, since it is supposed to be very cool and rainy this evening. I have a suspicion there are other surprises in store, too!

As a special present from the universe, a silver-haired daddy type wandered in to our agency today, visiting from out of town, and asked what to do - it is his birthday too! :) I had a good time explaining things, although he is going to be running around solo, so keep an eye out.

    joyous prayers and thanksgivings!
I will be missing the Pride Parade this year. I am off in a short while up to [info]kiturgy's house to help celebrate her ordination to the Episcopal diaconate. It has been a long time coming - a long time - and the Body of Christ is blessed by her perseverance.

If you wish, join me in this prayer, which will be part of the service tomorrow.

O God of unchangeable power and eternal light: Look favorably on your whole Church, that wonderful and sacred mystery; by the effectual working of your providence, carry out in tranquillity the plan of salvation; let the whole world see and know that things which were being cast down are being raised up, and things which had grown old are being made new, and that all things are being brought to their perfection by him through whom all things were made, your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

This is indeed Good News: "things which were being cast down are being raised up!"

    surviving the heat
I seem to be posting about once a week, which doesn't mean things are not happening. Getting a lot of reading done - I figured out how to save Gutenburg and other free online books as text files, and then transform them into ebooks for my palm pilot. Work is busy - Pride season at a gay/bi men's center is crazy!! (We supply most of the condoms to Boston bars and clubs. Lots of joy and lube to spread!) BF-Bear and I are being productive around the house. Wolfe, our sole kitty, is doing pretty well, although he gets very anxious when left alone - he spent the first 14 years of his life with a companion.

Plans for school in the fall (MSW, fulltime) proceed apace - it looks like I may have found an internship in a program for marginally housed people dealing with substance use and health (usually HIV) issues. Not what I would have chosen first off, but as a first year student, the majority of programs already have their interns. It has been nice to have three places ask me to apply there next year, for my second year internship.

I am lining things up for weekends in the summer. Priorities are cheap, cost-effective, and inexpensive. :) That means a bunch of camping, which I am looking forward to. I have been asked to give my labyrinth workshop at two events this year, and so I am refining that. I also brought it up as a topic for my internship, since the agency is very into alternative support for recovery, including things like reiki.

OK - off to bed soon - I am reading a friend's first novel :) and have to get up for work tomorrow. If you see a turquoise shimmery condom costume at Pride (not the parade, since the penis costume was nixed by the puritanical Pride Committee!), I made it...and got paid to do so!

    Happy Birthday, [info]fhaolan!
I haven't been posting much - work around Prde season keeps me pretty busy, and I am still trying to nail down an internship for the fall - but I did think it worth mentioning that Fhaolan has duly completed another trip around the sun, and you should go over and congratulate him for it!

    Beltane showers bring May...?
Off to Cauldron Farm for Beltane weekend. Have a good one.

And for those of you who were wondering, the unicorn costume plan was changed by the person writing the ritual. So...the anatomically correct unicorn will appear another time!

    sad news on the homefront
Thank you for your kind thoughts about BF-Bear's cat and companion of 14+ years, Oscar, who has also shared my home and heart since BF-Bear moved out here from MI. The cancer progressed to the point where it was necessary to make a very hard decision, and he was put to sleep last Saturday night after a few final good days at home.

You can see photos of his life here: http://s290.photobucket.com/albums/ll269/scottmsol/Oscar/

We are doing as well as can be expected, including our other cat, Wolfe, who you can see in the photos often entwined around Oscar.

birthday greetings for the brand new Friday
Let me be the first to wish [info]rubbermummy a very happy birthday.

It's not about the leather. It's not about the spandex.

    It's about the connection.

    thank you for your thoughts
The responses to my last post, about Oscar, our cat, were touching. Thank you very much.

I am sure that the wishes for healing were effective - BF-Bear brought Oscar home from the hospital yesterday. He is somewhat better, but it is clear that his ailment is cancer. We have him home for a while.

    keep a thought, please
Please send your version of healing wishes, if you are so inclined, for BF-Bear's (and mine by adoption) cat Oscar, who has been in & out of the kitty ER during this past weekend, last night, and today. Oscar is 14, a beautiful being, and much beloved. Thank you.

Sorry for email and comment replies, but this has been taking much of our attention.

    one cop, two cop...
BF-Bear drove me to work this morning, and we hit the cop bingo jackpot:

    1) A representative of Melrose's finest, who I am sure was counseling that young lady against the inevitable pothole damage to her car if she went one MPH over the limit. Their fleet looks like matchbox vehicles, all cute & shiny.

    2) The Postal Police, driving some sort of SUV. I was glad to realize that [info]chezelliott, [info]craig139, and my other friends in blue polyester are so well protected.

    3) An MBTA Transit Police vehicle - nowhere near an MBTA station.

    4) A woofy Statie (redundant, I know), standing in the general vicinity of a work zone. And his vehicle, of course.

    5) Several mounted cops, one with an unsightly twist in his glow-pinney strap.

I did however commit the ultimate LJ sin by not remembering I had a camera with me until afterwards.

    What? No April posts yet?
Could it be that I have been busy at work, and also that BF-Bear has gotten me hooked on the gamecube Lord of the Rings game? And that I have been tidying the house and looking forward to camping this summer? And figuring out how to make a butch & studly unicorn costume for Beltane?

    Yes!! All of the above.
